Brick Effect Tiles Vs Real Brick: Which Is Better?

Brick-effect tiles (also called brick-look tiles) are ceramic or porcelain tiles designed to mimic real brick. While both tiles and real brick have their pros, in many situations, brick effect tiles offer practical advantages.

The Advantages of Brick Effect Tiles:

1. Easier Installation

Brick-effect tiles are thinner and lighter. They can be installed on drywall, concrete, or even existing tiles.

With tiles there's no need for structural reinforcement like with real brick walls. In comparison, real brick is heavy and often requires stronger foundations or wall support.

When to choose tiles:

  •  DIY homeowners
  • Apartment renovations
  • Quick kitchen or living room feature walls
  • Projects with tight timelines

2. Lower Cost (Usually)

Brick tiles are generally cheaper in material and labor as there's no need for skilled masonry work, mortar work or structural changes. The time to instal is also faster which cuts down on labour costs

When to choose tiles:

  • Budget renovations
  • Property investors upgrading rentals
  • Large decorative walls without structural needs
  • Commercial properties

3. Less Maintenance

Brick-effect tiles (especially porcelain) are:

  • Non-porous
  • Stain-resistant
  • Easy to wipe clean
  • Don’t absorb moisture

Real brick is porous meaning it can absorb water, may develop mold in damp areas, and often needs sealing. Real brick can deteriorate or discolor in high-moisture environments unless properly treated.

When to choose tiles:

  • Moisture-Prone Areas: For kitchens and bathrooms, tiles are usually the safer choice.
  • For any space where you want to minimise maintenance and make cleaning easier.

4. More Design Options

Brick-effect tiles come in many colors (whitewashed, grey, black, rustic red, etc.). They also feature a vareity of different finishes (matte, gloss, textured)

Real brick has natural variation, which is beautiful, but less customizable.

When to choose tiles:

  • When consistent sizing and tone is important to you
  • For coordinated room color schemes

5. Lighter Weight

If you’re doing apartment renovations, Interior feature walls or DIY projects, tiles are much easier to handle and transport.

Real brick is often superior for structural walls. It can also have a depth and texture that tiles sometimes can’t fully replicate, however with ever improving tile designs this is often no longer a factor. Depending on the quality of the brick effect chosen, many tiles are now a very close match to real brick

When to choose tiles:

  • Upper-floor installations
  • Retrofit renovations
  • Homes where wall load limits matter
  • Temporary or removable design upgrades

So Which Is "Better"?

Brick-effect tile is often “better” for interiors because it’s cheaper, lighter, easier to install, and easier to maintain.

Real brick is better when you need structural strength or want maximum authenticity.
